Thriller Recommendations

Hola everyone. As summer is approaching, so, too, are the blockbusters, literary and on film. Last year, I read and thoroughly enjoyed Jeff Abbott's Trust Me (my review). I've been wanting to read another thriller. For some reason, Harlan Coben and Brad Thor's names crept into my head.

Can anyone recommend a good title by these guys? How about David Baldacci? Anything else? Could be old, too. Just looking for some great adventure and thrilling excitement.

Thanks.

  1. I haven't read anything by any of the three. I actually paged through a Baldacci and thought it didn't look good. However, I could recommend Michael Connoly. Good stuff.

  2. Brad Thor's The Last Patriot was great! Couldn't put it down-literally didn't sleep for several days. There is a new one coming out in June-Foreign Influence.

  3. If you haven't read James Rollins, I would recommend anything by him. Specifically, Subterranean, his first novel and finally out in a hardcover edition, or Altar of Eden, his most recent, would be good places to start.

  4. I've been looking for one too. Someone recommended Derailed as a real page turner. So I picked that up.

  5. I just finished Harlen Coben's Long Lost. It was very good. So good, I'm dying to go out and buy more books by him.

  6. Have you tried any of John Sandford's books? His early Lucas Davenports are great and his newest series with Virgil Flowers is really good. The first book in the Virgil Flowers series is "Dark of the Moon".

  7. I read one of David Baldacci's books. I found it moderately entertaining. His writing is of the airport bookstore page-turning quick read variety. It's generally rather light reading with a lot of action. Think low rent Clive Cussler, although I actually like his main character who shares a name with conspiracy theorist director, Oliver Stone, more than Cussler's Dirk Pitt. When it comes to character development, Baldacci is a bit better than Cussler... but as far as plots go I kind of felt a "been there, done that" predictability but it was entertaining enough to keep me reading to find out whether or not if my predictions were right. That is what usually keeps me reading such books. If the author manages to surprise and my predictions are wrong I'm generally quite pleased. If my predictions hold true. I rarely continue reading any other books by the same author. If you're up for suspense, skip Baldacci and go with Daniel Silva instead. He's a bit less predictable.

  8. Charles - I've read Connolly and enjoyed most of the ones I read. BTW, he's going to be on next week's "Castle" along with Cannell and Patterson.

Anonymous - Brad Thor sounds like fun. I'll check out The Last Patriot.

Randy - I read the bio at the Source of All Truth (Wikipedia) and noticed that Rollins' influences include Doc Savage. That's more than enough to get me to read one of his books.

Patti - Derailed. I will check it out, perhaps Audible, too.

Beth - I checked out Tell No One from the library yesterday. Coben's books seem to be non-series books so I guess I can pick them up in whatever order. That true?

Sandra - I've seen Sandford's name but read nothing. I'm adding him to the list.

Perplexio - I've only read one Cussler book (the first) so the model had yet to be set. Silva is another name I recognize. Adding him to the list, too. Any recommendations?
