You'll find it in everything from old Nancy Drew and Hardy Boy books to news stories of the day.<br /><br />I don't doubt that Gardner wanted to save keystrokes (I shudder when I remember writing papers and lectures without a computer) but this probably wouldn't be a good example of it.<br /><br />It's been years since I read the books, and I'm glad to have stumbled over your delightful review.
